The Tories have allied themselves with parties of the extreme right in Europe. How does this affect the UK?

(by Geoff Seeff <geoffseeff@cix.co.uk> on 17th November 2009)

This misalignment may well prove to be the equivalent of David Cameron taking small daily doses of arsenic and gradually poisoning himself and his party to death. He has persuaded Tory MEPs to form a new grouping (European Conservatives and Reformists - ECR) with, amongst others on the lunatic fringe, a Czech party that denies climate change and hates the Germans, a Polish party that denies the holocaust, the ruling party in Lithuania that has recently passed homophobic laws and a Latvian party that still celebrates Hitler's birthday. The only thing that "unites" them is their antipathy towards the European Union.

Why is it poison? Firstly, because there are many leading politicians in the Tory party, to say nothing of its activists and supporters, who believe in the ideals of the Union, if not the way it is run (no less do the LibDems). They are horrified by the attitudes of the partners chosen for this forced marriage. Secondly, the ECR will try to undermine rather than strengthen an institution that has helped bring uninterrupted peace and prosperity to our shores for over 50 years. Thirdly and most importantly, the Tory party has ruled itself out of playing a positive role in the strategic development of Europe and indeed the reform of its administration - a lost opportunity were ever to form or be part of a government in the UK.

David Cameron must be not a little embarrassed having called for a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty when he knew that it was never going to be possible. That embarrassment will turn to shame as his new found friends continue to make pronouncements that civilised people find repugnant and are more usually associated with the BNP.
